In the reflected light
The novel “Symmetry Lecturer” Andrei Bitov wrote for nearly forty years — or rather, he didn’t write, but “translated from the foreign”: according to the author, in his youth he came across a book of some unknown Englishman, telling about another writer — also unknown. Subsequently, the book was lost, and Bitov decided to restore more from memory than to actually translate the lost original. However, all this fictional design is nothing more than a complex system of mirrors in which familiar objects gain a different weight, meaning and volume. The writer Urbino Vanoski (either the hero, or one of the authors of this strange book) in pursuit of incorporeal trouble loses his only love, after which he actually dies in the flesh: from now on the border between the surrounding reality and the books that he composes, for him, for himErased. Life directly flows into the text and back. The novel is composed of individual heads of none, telling about love and loss, about memory and oblivion, about loneliness and fantasy. Incredibly beautiful, smart and sophisticated prose of Bitov appeals more to intelligence than to feelings. However, making phenomena that we often perceive through the prism of emotions, the object of understanding and analysis, the author achieves an amazing effect: optical settings are changing, the angle of view is elusively shifted, and suddenly we see in what is happening around and expected and expectedsee. And the result of this is a slight dizziness at first, and after that — an exciting feeling of crystal clarity, logic and transparency of everything that our look addresses.
